Currently, Ms. Gupta resides at her Shalimar Bagh residence and will move to the renovated bungalow upon completion of the work.
Earlier, Ms. Gupta made headlines for her decision to reject the use of the former official residence of ex-Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, located at 6 Flagstaff Road. She announced plans to convert the extravagant mansion—dubbed ‘Sheeshmahal’ by the BJP—into a public museum.
“We will make Sheeshmahal a museum…We will also fulfill all the promises PM Modi made. I thank him for choosing me for this position,” Ms. Gupta had told NDTV after taking office.
The BJP had long criticized the lavish renovation of Mr. Kejriwal’s residence, which had been expanded into a 40,000-square-yard property with luxury furnishings. A report from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), released in October 2024, confirmed high-end installations and a significant budget spent on the bungalow’s makeover.
Mr. Kejriwal vacated the controversial premises following his resignation amid political pressure in October 2024.
By opting for a fresh start at Raj Niwas Marg and proposing to turn Kejriwal’s residence into a museum, Rekha Gupta aims to set a new tone of transparency and accountability in the Chief Minister’s office.
