Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad remains unapologetic after a video of him physically assaulting a canteen staff member over alleged food quality issues went viral. Speaking to NDTV, the Maharashtra legislator boldly declared, “I have no regrets,” and insisted that he is “not just an MLA, but a warrior too.”
The incident, which occurred at the MLA canteen in Mumbai, shows Gaikwad kicking and punching a staff member over what he claimed was “rotten dal.” The video has triggered outrage and renewed debates on the conduct of elected representatives and their abuse of power, especially following another viral clip involving a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader’s son engaging in abusive behavior.
Describing the sequence of events, Gaikwad said he began vomiting after a few bites of the meal and felt sick. “I asked for dal, rice, and two chapatis. After a few morsels, I threw up and felt unwell. I rushed to the canteen without even changing and asked them to smell the dal. It was spoiled. Even the manager admitted it was not fit for consumption,” he said. Gaikwad further alleged the canteen frequently served stale chicken and eggs, risking the health of thousands.
When asked whether his violent behavior was appropriate for someone in public office, Gaikwad doubled down. “I’ve complained about the food several times. I used the language Balasaheb Thackeray taught us. Meri satak gayi (I lost my cool). I am trained in judo, gymnastics, karate, and wrestling. I can use swords if needed. I am an MLA, and I’m also a fighter,” he declared.
Justifying his outburst, Gaikwad said that when the administration fails to act on complaints, people are forced to take matters into their own hands. “What should people do when they’re served rotten food every day? I’m not a Gandhian. I have no regrets. I will raise this issue in the Assembly as well,” he added.
The incident has sparked public criticism, with many questioning whether politicians are held to any standard of accountability or if their positions shield them from consequences.
