Kerala Governor Backs NEP 2020 as a Move to Decolonise Education

In a compelling address at the Gyan Sabha national education conference in Kochi, Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar described the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 as India’s first serious effort to decolonise its education system. Speaking at the event organized by the Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas, a body linked with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Arlekar stressed that the country had long been functioning under a “colonial mindset” without fully realising its impact on Indian families and societal thinking.

“Our entire thought process was shaped by a foreign model. We didn’t even notice when it seeped into our homes and lives,” said Arlekar. “Today, we are consciously making an effort to break those chains of colonisation.”

He credited the Modi-led government for bringing in a policy that breaks from legacy education models, stating that NEP 2020 is unlike anything previously taught in India’s post-independence era. Arlekar pointed out that despite India’s potential to lead the world — referencing the concept of ‘Vishwa Guru’ — the country had previously failed to assert itself due to ideological suppression.

“Political independence in 1947 was only one aspect of freedom. True freedom lies in reclaiming our cultural and intellectual identity,” he noted.

The Governor urged citizens and educators alike to actively participate in the transformation, asking, “Do you want to be a part of the change?

He emphasized that Viksit Bharat (Developed India) is more than just an economic aspiration — it is a comprehensive vision that encompasses inclusive growth across all segments of society.

The event was also attended by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, adding weight to the national significance of the discussions surrounding the NEP.
