In a powerful symbol of deep-rooted diplomatic ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome during his state visit to the Maldives. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) presented him with the traditional ‘Haiykolhu’, a revered symbol of Maldivian hospitality and honor.
The ceremonial reception took place at Republic Square, where President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu personally welcomed the Indian Prime Minister. In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), the MNDF stated:
“His Excellency Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was warmly welcomed by His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu at Republic Square, where he was honored with a Guard of Honor by MNDF on his state visit to Maldives. The ceremonial welcome included a 21-Gun Salute, symbolizing deep respect and the strong bilateral ties between Maldives and India. Adding to the grandeur, His Excellency was presented with the traditional ‘Haiykolhu’ by MNDF, a cherished Maldivian gesture of hospitality and honor.”
This distinguished ceremonial guard and the symbolic 21-gun salute reflected not only the diplomatic warmth but also reaffirmed the cultural ties and mutual respect between the two nations.
Later in the day, Prime Minister Modi and President Muizzu held an important bilateral meeting in Malé, focusing on enhancing strategic, cultural, and economic cooperation between India and the Maldives.
This visit marks a significant milestone in the Indo-Maldivian relationship, emphasizing mutual commitment to peace, development, and regional stability in the Indian Ocean region.
