Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora is set to retire on July 31, marking the end of a distinguished career for the 1988-batch IPS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre. With his retirement nearing, the race to appoint the next Police Chief has intensified among senior officers of the AGMUT cadre.
In a significant move, the Ministry of Home Affairs has transferred Anil Shukla, a 1995-batch IPS officer and former Director General of Police in Mizoram, to Delhi. The timing of his transfer has sparked speculation within bureaucratic circles, with many interpreting it as a strategic placement ahead of the high-stakes appointment.
Two other prominent contenders are also in the spotlight: Satish Golcha and Praveer Ranjan, both 1992-batch IPS officers from the AGMUT cadre. Golcha currently serves as the Director General of Tihar Jail and has previously held key roles including Special Commissioner (Intelligence) in Delhi Police and DGP of Arunachal Pradesh. Ranjan, on the other hand, is presently the Additional Director General in CISF and has served as DGP of Chandigarh as well as Special Commissioner (Crime) in Delhi.
Notably, the central government is reportedly inclined to appoint the next Delhi Police Commissioner from within the AGMUT cadre, signaling a departure from its previous practice of bringing in officers from outside the cadre. This preference has further fueled internal competition and anticipation within the police force.
