Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Meets President Murmu Following Dhankhar’s Resignation

In a significant development following Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s unexpected resignation, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh met President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday.

The President’s office confirmed the meeting and shared an image on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Shri Harivansh, Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha, called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”

The meeting comes just a day after Dhankhar, who also serves as the ex-officio Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, tendered his resignation at the onset of the Monsoon Session of Parliament. The move has raised questions about the political undercurrents leading to this abrupt decision.

Mr. Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022, and his term was scheduled to continue until August 2027. His resignation took many by surprise and has left a temporary leadership vacuum in the upper house.

In the wake of his resignation, Deputy Chairman Harivansh stepped in to chair the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha during Tuesday’s morning session, ensuring continuity in parliamentary operations.

While the official reasons behind Dhankhar’s resignation remain undisclosed, the meeting between Mr. Harivansh and President Murmu is being viewed as a crucial consultative step in managing the evolving leadership scenario within the Rajya Sabha.

Stay tuned for further developments as this story unfolds during the ongoing Monsoon Session.
